In short

  • Viagra is a popular medication used to treat erectile dysfunction.
  • Sexual arousal is the first step to get an erection.
  • The relaxation of the corpus cavernosa allows the blood vessels inside those tissues to fill with blood.

What is Viagra?

Viagra is a popular medication used to treat erectile dysfunction. Viagra contains sildenafil citrate as the active ingredient. This is a type of drug known as a PDE-5 inhibitor.

How Do Erections Work?

Sexual arousal is the first step to get an erection. When you are sexually aroused, the brain sends nerve impulses to the penis which causes nitric oxide to be released. This relaxes tissues in the penis called corpus cavernosa.

The relaxation of the corpus cavernosa allows the blood vessels inside those tissues to fill with blood. The blood becomes trapped which increases the pressure inside the penis, making it firm, enlarged and erect.

The penis contains tissues called the corpus cavernosa. When sexually excited, these tissues relax, which allows the blood vessels in the penis to fill with blood. The blood increases the pressure inside the penis, making it firm and erect.

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by problems at any point in the erection process.

Inadequate sexual arousal can prevent an erection. This can be exacerbated by stress, depression, relationship problems and other psychological challenges.

Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by damage to the nerves that supply the penis. This can stop the tissues in the penis responding to the impulses from the brain. Damage to the nerves can be caused by diabetes, vitamin deficiencies and injury to the perineum (the area between scrotum and anus). This type of erectile dysfunction has also been related to excessive cycling as the saddle can put too much pressure on the perineum and the nerves in that area.

The most common cause of erectile dysfunction in older men is damage to blood vessels. Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are very common conditions that can all lead to erectile dysfunction. These conditions lead to the blood vessels becoming narrower. This restricts the blood supply to the erectile tissues.

How Does Viagra Work?

Viagra is a type of medication known as a PDE-5 inhibitor. As mentioned above, sexual stimulation leads to nitric oxide release which relaxes the corpus cavernosa. Relaxation of the corpus cavernosa enables blood to flow into the penis causing an erection. Viagra increases the effectiveness of nitric oxide which ultimately leads to the widening of the blood vessels in the penis. This increases the blood flow and helps you to get a firmer erection following sexual stimulation.
