Many people starting weight loss medications like Wegovy want to see results as quickly as possible. And it can be tempting to start on a higher dose of treatment to achieve this.
Wegovy 7.2 mg is the highest dose available in the UK. But it’s not where you should start on your Wegovy dosage schedule, and it’s not right for everyone. Let’s find out who can take Wegovy 7.2 mg and who shouldn’t use it.
Wegovy 7.2 mg: A Brief Introduction
Currently, the highest dose of Wegovy injections on the UK market is 7.2mg. Previously, this required three separate 2.4 mg injections to make up the full 7.2 mg dose. The pen format is now changing to a single-use 7.2mg pen, delivering the full weekly dose in one injection.
This higher dose of Wegovy was developed specifically to provide better results for people who have plateaued or been unable to achieve sufficient results on the standard Wegovy 2.4 mg maintenance dose.
Can You Start Wegovy At 7.2 mg?
No, you can’t and shouldn’t start Wegovy at 7.2 mg. Instead, you should work your way up to the dose via the titration process. Titration refers to gradually moving up through the doses of a medication in order to find the lowest, effective dose.
For Wegovy, this means finding the dose that provides sufficient weight loss, while keeping common side effects to a manageable level. This makes it easier for people to adhere to the treatment plan, and achieve long-term, sustainable results.

Who Can Take Wegovy 7.2 mg?
Wegovy 7.2 mg has been designed for people who have already titrated up to the 2.4 mg dose, but who need additional support to reach their weight loss goals. This could be because they:
- Have reached a plateau on their weight loss journey and need help to progress further.
- Aren’t experiencing adequate appetite suppression. This means they are either finding hunger hard to cope with, or they are regularly eating surplus calories.
This is in addition to the usual criteria you’ll need to meet to be considered a suitable candidate for Wegovy.
Who Should Not Take Wegovy 7.2 mg?
Not everyone will be suitable for the Wegovy 7.2 mg dose. Your clinician will advise you not to increase to the highest dose if you’re on the 2.4 mg dose and:
- You are still struggling with side effects.
- You are experiencing sufficient appetite suppression.
- You struggle to eat three balanced meals a day.
The 7.2 mg dose of Wegovy is not recommended for people who are just starting weight loss treatment. Instead, you should follow the usual titration program, gradually increasing your dose so your body adjusts to treatment.

Who Cannot Take Wegovy
Wegovy, including the 7.2 mg dose, may not be suitable, for example, if you have certain medical conditions or medical history, including:
- If you have ever had a reaction to the active ingredient in Wegovy (semaglutide) or any of the other ingredients in the injection. See a full list in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL).
- If you have a personal or family history of thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2.
- If you have ever had pancreatitis before or are at increased risk of it. That’s because there’s a rare but proven link between Wegovy and acute pancreatitis.
- If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) advises women to use effective contraception while taking this medication.
