In short

Watching your hair grow can feel like the world’s longest waiting game. Our hair is technically the body’s fastest growing tissue, which seems hard to wrap your head around. Your hair grows on average 0.5-1.7cm per month (about 2-8 inches at the end of the year), while also shedding after 50-100 days on average.

Making small changes to your daily routine such as reducing heat damage, improving your diet, and focusing on hair care can promote your hair growth and reduce hair shedding. All of these changes can be done from your home and do not need expensive hair treatments

Frequent Trims

Split ends are notorious culprits for stunting hair growth. This is because split ends cause hair strands to stick to each other and tangle. This means hair sheds faster, and won’t grow properly. Regular trims of your hair ends will remove the split ends and prevent unnecessary hair loss.

Scalp Massaging

A scalp massage is not just relaxing, but also has many beneficial effects for the scalp. Massaging the scalp increases circulation to the hair follicles, while also strengthening hair strands. In order to massage your scalp, use your fingers and rub them in circular motions on your scalp for about 5 minutes. To make the massage more relaxing, you can add essential oils to your massage and rinse them off after.

Avoid Heat

Heat styling is bad for your hair. Using hot tools like blow drying, straightening or curling is a sure fire way of damaging your hair leading to breakage and frizz. If you can avoid heat styling that would be the best option; however, if this is not possible, try reducing the temperature and use hair products that protect your hair from heat.

Shampoo vs Conditioner

Over-shampooing can stunt hair growth, as it strips the natural oils you have on your hair and scalp every time you use it. It is generally recommended to shampoo your hair twice a week to prevent it drying out. On the other hand, you should condition your hair every time you wash it, as it can repair damage to hair. Once in a while, it is good to use a hair mask or deep conditioner to restore moisture to your hair.

Food to Help Grow Hair

We take supplements to nourish our body, so why shouldn’t we do the same for our hair? The general vitamins essential for hair growth are iron, vitamins C and D, omega-3 and zinc. These supplements will not only benefit your hair, but also your body.

It is important to remember thinning and hair loss is a natural part of ageing; supplements will only stop hair loss/thinning so much. Genetics play a huge part in male hair loss – androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) is an inherited genetic cause of hair loss. Alopecia areata, another type of hair loss, can be a result of stress or autoimmune conditions.

Medications

There are medications available that can slow down the process of hair thinning, but it is important to remember these medications do not reverse this process; some may allow a small amount of new growth from senescent hair follicles, but will not reactivate dead follicles.

Minoxidil and Finasteride are two medications that have been approved for use to treat hair loss in men. Minoxidil is available as an ingredient in Regaine, a foam or solution treatment that is applied directly to the scalp. Finasteride, and its branded version Propecia, are tablets taken daily that reduce the levels of testosterone in the body. This helps to slow down hair loss.

You can order hair loss treatments through Simple Online Pharmacy after completing an online assessment. One of our doctors will review your answers, and if they have no concerns, can prescribe your medication, and arrange delivery straight to your doorstep.
