What is Nexium?

Nexium is a branded version of Esomeprazole. Nexium belongs to a class of medications known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs work by reducing the amount of gastric acid produced by the stomach. This helps to reduce acid reflux, which is caused by gastric acid leaking out of the stomach into the oesophagus (the food pipe).

Can you buy Nexium over the counter in the UK?

Nexium is available over the counter in packs of fourteen 20mg tablets. But, 40mg tablets and packs of 28 tablets are only available on prescription.

Alternative treatments

A range of over the counter and prescription treatments are available for the treatment of acid reflux.

Over the counter medications include:

  • Omeprazole 20mg
  • Ranitidine 75mg
  • Antacids, such as Rennies
  • Alginates, such as Gaviscon

Prescription medications include:

  • Omeprazole 40mg
  • Ranitidine 150mg
  • Lansoprazole 30mg
  • Pantoprazole 20-40mg

Acid reflux is closely related to several lifestyle factors. Therefore, making the following lifestyle changes may help to reduce your acid reflux:

  • Lose weight if you are overweight
  • Avoid eating late at night or lying down after eating
  • Reduce alcohol intake or avoid alcohol altogether
  • Stop smoking, or reduce the use of cigarettes if possible.

These changes will help to reduce the relaxation of the muscle at the top of the stomach, which will help to reduce the chance of gastric acid escaping into the oesophagus, where it can cause damage and irritation to the tissue.
